The Cottage Studio
The Cottage Studio is an important part of our society. It is the first of its kind in all of Ontario, and has given wings to fellow artists to allow them to grow and develop artistic expression.
At the Grand Re-opening on May 8, 2007, Dr. Peter Cook of Hamilton Program for Schizophrenia said it best; “The project, is about having a place where people can feel free to be inspired and inspire others, to share hopes and dreams through artistic expression.”
Approximately 100,000 people in Hamilton alone, according to Census Canada Statistics, have, will have, or have had a prolonged mental illness in their lifetime that is so severe it will affect every aspect of their life.
This program is for artists with mental disorders and promotes health through creative art. Art tells all that man knows both spiritually and physically. It has recorded man’s emotions, his beliefs, his struggles, and disasters, as well as beauty throughout history and time to come.
The Cottage Studio offers a peaceful environment where colleagues can work without pressure and receive help only if they want it. There are many good artists there, and beginners are welcome. Maybe some day, people will look at the Cottage Studio like we look at the Group of Seven now.
Thanks to Rev. Dickey, the Cottage Studio was given a home in a peaceful atmosphere where we can grow both in numbers and ability and reach out to the community who welcomes us, not as some one who needs help, but some one who has something to offer and can be a viable benefit to the community.
We hope we can continue this relationship with St. Paul’s and we are eternally grateful for St. Paul’s allowing us this opportunity otherwise we may not have had without their generous help. Thank you one and all.

Mental Illness / Re: Art In General

I believe that art is a way to communicate to others. To show how you see beauty and how you feel about things. It is a way to bring people closer together.

Mental Illness / People helping people

People that are acting strangely scare other people. Some people feel they need to address the situation themselves. For the main part, getting help can be very helpful. For the same reasons you would not do surgery yourself on some one who has fallen, you should not try to fix them yourself.

If some one is acting strangely and possibly a danger to himself or others, getting them the help they need by calling the police is the best thing that could happen to them. The police are trained on how to deal with these people and know how and where to take them to get them help.
